This season, 2019 LVMH Prize finalist Kenneth Ize put local artists and craftsmen under the spotlight by showcasing aso oke, a traditional and sustainable Nigerian fabric used to create ceremonial clothing. With multicolored striped jackets handwoven in Ilorin, Nigeria, and Merino jacquard originating from Austria, the Lagos-born designer blended Nigerian culture and craft with his background as a graduate of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Naomi Campbell closed the show, which marked Ize’s first runway presentation on the Paris Fashion Week schedule, as well as unprecedented African representation on a European runway.
