Autumn Winter 2022
“Togetherness” is the new collection presented by Grace Wales Bonner, the curator of the 22nd issue of A Magazine Curated By.
Togetherness, an ensemble––
Togetherness draws inspiration from the radical creativity of avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and his wife the artist Moki Cherry. Based in rural Sweden during the 1970s, the Cherrys also traveled widely during this time, creating ‘organic music’ performances in both indoor and outdoor settings, transformed by Moki Cherry into profound spiritual environments adorned with the vibrance of her hand-made tapestries and wall hangings.

The collection embraces a joyful eclecticism, evoking a holistic way of life that flows from indoors to outdoors, from domestic rhythms to creative exuberance. Celebrating world craft and hand-making, seasonal tailoring and denim are constructed with handwoven cottons made in Burkina Faso. Spiritual loungewear is expressed in recycled cashmere track suiting, and embroidered pyjamas radiating silver light. Experiential outerwear is rendered in Turquoise nappa, and the wonderment of evening is reflected in mirrored hand crochet dresses and peacock inspired mens tailoring.

Togetherness also brings newness to Wales Bonner’s ongoing partnership with adidas Originals through technical craftsmanship – reimagined Gazelles in jewel tones and a sporty Mary-Jane in shimmering brocade.

The collection debut is accompanied by a film by Steven Traylor, who also photographed Damian Marley inside A#22. Filmed in Los Angeles and featuring acclaimed musician Caleb Giles of Standing on the Corner, it presents the artist’s personal exploration of the themes of universality, community and creative exchange.

Among eroded rock formations and ancient Nabataean ruins lies an oasis of sorts, one that nourishes the spirit of AlUla, Saudi Arabia. A community gathers at this oasis: Villa Hegra, the latest Saudi-French jewel in the constellation of cultural villas.
When I arrived at Nicklas Skovgaard’s Copenhagen studio, he was standing outside in the snow sipping a small cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette. He wore a navy-blue Nike baseball cap and a simple navy coat over a button-up shirt and trousers, the kind of pared-back outfit that has become something of a uniform for him. He and his team had moved into the space just only a month earlier, he said.
