Spring Summer 2025
80’s Power Dressing
A Lab Curated By
The Spring Summer 2025 runways showcased a notable revival of 1980s power dressing, with brands such as Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Jil Sander and Stella McCartney drawing inspiration from this vibrant era. This resurgence reflects not only the bold aesthetics of the 1980s—characterized by sharp silhouettes, structured designs and vivid colours—but also a cultural context marked by significant social and political change, and perhaps the glimmer of optimism it embodied.
Nostalgia has become a creative point of departure for designers, encouraging them to look back and incorporate elements from past styles. This retro-resurgence contrasts sharply with the restraint of recent “quiet luxury” trends, signaling a renewed embrace of a more maximalist approach. However, this desire for boldness is often tempered by fears of instability, stemming from ongoing economic and social challenges which underscores the fragility of the luxury market, even among its most established players. For example, LVMH reported a decline in revenue for its fashion and leather goods division in the third quarter, marking a 5% decrease in organic growth compared to the same period last year.
Commercial considerations significantly influence this dynamic. Many consumers prefer familiarity and stability, prompting designers to lean into nostalgic themes hat resonate with their audience. By revisiting established styles, brands can provide a sense of comfort, as experimental designs may risk alienating those who find security in the familiar. This strategy enables brands to navigate market complexities while still connecting with their consumers. This reliance on nostalgia, however, raises a critical question: is this an innovative reinvention, or simply a safe retreat? As brands continue to revisit past codes, we must consider whether we are witnessing a cycle of revival or a search for new inspiration in an uncertain industry.
